As you probably know, healthcare is among the fastest growing sectors in the Country, and a growing number of options are offered both on campus and online to obtain the training that you need. But just where do you begin? Many potential students start by searching for schools that are within driving distance of their homes and then comparing tuition. Or they might search the internet looking for online classes and select the least expensive one. But while cost and location are relevant issues when making your selection, they should not be the only ones when evaluating medical billing and coding schools. Such qualifications as reputation and accreditation must be considered as well. We will go over a list of topics that you should ask the schools you are assessing in order to learn what you need to know before making your selection. But first, let’s take a look at what medical coders and billers do and the educational and certification options offered.

Medical Coding Job Summary

Medical coders work on the front line of the billing systems for Spangler PA private practices and hospitals. They have the responsibility to examine the medical records of patients and assign universal codes to all services provided. These services may be for medical, diagnosis or dental procedures, or any medical supplies or equipment utilized. There are several codes that are used in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders use information from sources including nursing and physician notes, patient charts, and radiology and lab reports. Coders must not only know what services were provided in total for accuracy, but must have a functioning knowledge of all private payer and government rules that influence coding as well. Incorrectly coded claims may result in services not being paid for, services being paid at a lower rate, or the provider being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can literally cost Spangler PA doctors and hospitals multiple thousands of dollars in revenue annually, a good medical coder is a necessary asset to the healthcare team. They can work in any kind of healthcare facility, including private practices, hospitals, clinics and emergency care centers. It is not unusual for seasoned medical coders to work at home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

Medical Billing Job Description

Spangler PA medical billers collect revenueAs vital as the medical coder’s function is, it would be for naught without the contribution of the medical biller whose labors generate revenue. Medical billing clerks are extremely important to Spangler PA healthcare facilities and are essentially responsible for keeping them in business. Sometimes the biller and coder are the same individual within a healthcare organization, but they can also be two independent specialists. After the coder has carried out his or her duty, the biller utilizes the codes provided to fill out and submit claim forms to insurance carriers, Medicaid or Medicare. After they have been adjusted by the applicable organization, patients can then be invoiced for deductibles or additional out of pocket expenses. On a routine basis, a medical biller can also do any of the following:

  • Check health insurance benefits for patients and help them with billing concerns or questions
  • Follow up on submitted patient claims and appeal those that have been denied
  • Act as an intermediary between the healthcare provider, the insurance carriers and the patients for correct claim resolution
  • Generate and manage Accounts Receivables reports
  • Create and take care of unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billing clerks not only work for family practices, but also Spangler PA hospitals, urgent care facilities, nursing homes or medical groups. They may practice in any kind of medical facility that depends on the incomes generated from billing patients and third party payers.

Medical Coder and Biller Online Instruction and Certification

Spangler PA patients are billed for medical treatmentIt’s important that you get your training from a reputable school, whether it’s a community college, technical or trade school. While it is not a requirement in many cases to obtain a professional certification, the school you enroll in should be accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). The majority of schools just require that you earn either a high school diploma or a GED to be eligible. The most expedient way to become either a medical coder or biller (or both) is to attain a certificate, which normally takes about one year to complete. An Associate Degree is an alternative for a more extensive education, which for almost all schools calls for 2 years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees for medical coding and billing are not widely offered. When your training has been concluded, although not mandated in most states, you might wish to acquire a professional certification. Certification is an effective way for those new to the profession to show potential employers that they are not only qualified but committed to their occupation. Just some of the organizations that provide certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Graduating from an accredited medical coding and billing course, in conjunction with obtaining a professional certification, are the best ways to accelerate your new career and succeed in the fast growing medical care field.

And as an added advantage, online colleges are often less expensive than the standard classroom options. Costs for such things as tuition, study materials and commuting may be minimized or eliminated. But be careful, as not all online courses are reputable. That’s why it’s important to confirm that the online school you select is accredited to ensure a quality education. We will address the benefits of accreditation in the next segment. Just make sure to confirm that any online school you are considering is accredited by one of the national accrediting agencies, for instance the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. So if you are disciplined enough to devote yourself to this type of learning, then acquiring your certificate or degree online may be the right choice for you.

Things to Ask Online Medical Billing and Coding Schools

Now that you have a better idea what a medical coder and biller does, along with what training options are offered, you must begin the process of researching schools. But since there a large number of training options offered at community colleges as well as technical, trade and vocational schools online and within the Spangler PA area, you should have a ready list of questions in order to assess each one. And when you add all of the online schools that offer medical billing and coding classes, the project can become rather formidable. As we have already addressed, expense and location are going to be significant issues, particularly if you have a modest budget and will be traveling to classes from your Spangler home. And whether or not the program and school are accredited must be part of your vetting process also. So let’s review a few of the other questions that you should ask the programs you are looking at so that you can evaluate each one and make the right choice.

Is the Online College Accredited? It’s important that the program and school you pick are accredited by a highly regarded accrediting organization, for instance the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online college, it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. Not only will accreditation help guarantee that the education you receive will be of the highest quality, it might help with your future employment in Spangler PA as well. Many Spangler medical facilities will only hire entry level applicants that have completed an accredited medical coding and billing training course. And financial aid and student loans are in many cases only obtainable for schools that have earned an accreditation.

What is the Online School’s Reputation? Prior to choosing a medical coding and billing program, check out what its reputation and ranking are compared to other programs. This is particularly relevant if you have no experience in the industry, since potential employers will mostly be evaluating you based on the quality of your training. As we have covered, verifying that the college is accredited is a first step. Checking with college rating organizations, for instance U.S. News and World Report, can confirm the quality of the school as well. Another option is to call some Spangler PA medical organizations that you might be interested in working for and ask which programs they recommend. Remember that even if the college itself does not have an excellent reputation, its medical billing and coding program may still be highly regarded.

Is there an Employment Assistance Program? Finding a job after graduating in your new field might be difficult without the help of a job placement program. Check if the colleges you are reviewing have job assistance programs in the Spangler PA area and what their job placement rates are. A high and rapid placement rate is an excellent indication that the coding and billing school has a sizable network of medical care employers where they can refer their graduates. It also suggests that the school’s graduates are in high demand in the marketplace.

Where is the School’s Location ? If you are planning on driving to class from your Spangler PA residence, then the location of the program will be of significant importance. Obviously if you enroll in an medical coding and billing online program, then the location of the school will not be important. One thing to remember is that if you go to classes at a junior or community college, most charge a higher tuition for students that reside outside of their districts. So you may want to first consider those schools that are within your local area.

What is the Overall Cost? Medical coding and billing certification programs can vary in cost based on the type of credential earned and the length of training provided. But remember, tuition is not the only expense for your education. Expenditures also include such things as the cost of books, supplies and commuting. Financial aid may be accessible to help reduce a portion of the cost, so make sure to contact the college’s financial assistance department to see what is offered in 15775. Of course if you decide to attend an online school, some of these added costs, such as for commuting may be reduced or even eliminated.

Are Classes Accessible that Match your Schedule? Many students keep working while attending school and need a convenient class schedule. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Spangler PA, make sure that they are available at those times. If you can only enroll on a part-time schedule, make sure that the school you select provides that alternative. Also, ask what the process is for making up classes missed because of work, illness or family responsibilities.

Attending Online Billing and Coding Classes in Spangler Pennsylvania?

If you live in the greater Spangler PA area and will be attending Online Medical Billing and Coding Classes from home, the following information may be both interesting and informative about your local stomping grounds.

Spangler, Pennsylvania

Spangler, Pennsylvania was a town, since merged, and former borough located in the northwest corner of Cambria County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is nestled in the valley of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River between hills of the Appalachian Mountains of the Eastern United States. The area was first settled by Europeans in the early-to-middle 19th century. The presence of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River allowed loggers to move their harvest down river. Small farms developed and the town came into existence in 1893 when mining of extensive bituminous coal fields in the area became the dominant industry. The mining companies required skilled workers and many came from Great Britain and Eastern Europe. Railroads were built to transport the coal and the town flourished from economic activity.

A mining disaster occurred on November 6, 1922 at Reilly No. 1 Mine. 79 miners were killed when an explosion occurred at 7:20 a.m. as 112 men had begun work. The explosion blew out some stoppings and overcasts and also the side and end walls of the fan housing. Help was called from other mines and from the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh. The fan housing was patched and the fan started, making the concrete-lined, 112 foot shaft an intake. Recovery workers without apparatus encountered a live man making his way out to fresh air and brought him and four others out. All were badly affected by mine gases, as were 18 of the rescuers. Apparatus crews were then admitted, and 22 other survivors were rescued. Five other men made their way out unassisted. Seventy-six bodies were found, and three of the rescued men died. The reasons for the explosion were explained. The mine had been rated gaseous in 1918, but at the insistence of the new operators it was rated as non-gaseous although a fireboss was employed and men burned by gas on at least four occasions. The low-volatile dust of the coal helped to spread the explosion. Gas that had accumulated in one or more rooms through open doors and deficient ventilation was ignited by the miners' open lights. Fireboss examinations were neglected and incomplete. A monument constructed to the memory of those lost in this disaster stands in a park near the center of the town.

While a winter storm accumulated 11 inches of fresh snow and temperatures near 0 degrees, a fire broke out in Weaver's Variety Shop on January 1, 1971. More than 100 volunteer firefighters from Spangler and surrounding companies fought the fire under severe weather conditions. A wall collapsed killing two firemen, Frank Kinkead, 47, and John DeDea,32, both of nearby Patton, PA. Other firemen were injured. The fire destroyed three buildings, including the old Spangler Theater along the main street, Bigler Avenue.
